  The Belfast terminal isn't anywhere near as good as Cairnryan for foot passengers, particularly those with children or dogs. I often travel with my small children and dogs. Cairnryan was great, we had a great experience and can't fault the staff at all. In Belfast we had a very different experience. We had to wait in a small seating area at the check in desk, the outside area wasn't safe to allow the dogs to stretch their legs prior to travel as the door opened directly onto the lanes for cars. Security and immigration officers who were stationed there were very kind to us during our wait which was about 1 hour, not ideal for 2 small energetic kids. Staff kept us waiting until all other travellers were on-board before allowing us onto the boat, they refused to allow my children to accompany me to take the dogs the the kennel area and I was forced to leave them with a female staff member who clearly didn't want to be around them longer than necessary. I wasn't happy at all about leaving them either, this should not have happened. We struggled to access the car deck for the kennels due to passengers coming up the stairs and we weren't permitted to use the lift. By the time we were finally sorted out our next issue was finding a seat, we struggled to find a table and at 1 point thought we were going to have to sit on the floor, not ideal with 2 children and 3 bags. This is the 1st time in many, many journeys on this route this has happened and it was very stressful. Do better Stena!
